PAINLESS JOURNALING SUNDAYS with SarahKaye
Welcome to the second installment of Painless Journaling! For those of you that didn’t catch last Sunday’s post, you can find the introduction and first exercise in this post. You might want to read through it to get the most benefit from each lesson. Basically, Painless Journaling is designed to get your creative juices flowing and open a part of your brain that will allow you to better express yourself in your journaling efforts. Many people say journaling is the hardest part of scrapbooking and these exercises are designed to help you unblock your creative writing mojo.
WEEK 2- THE WHOLE PICTURE
This exercise is a “think” exercise. You can jot down notes, etc., you may choose to write it all out if you’d like, but you may feel more freedom if you just think aloud. There isn’t any actual writing required for the exercise. Once you do the exercise, you’ll journal for your own photos and, obviously, you’ll want to write that down!
In preparation, get out a set of photos. Photos from a specific event rather than everyday photos will probably work best but everyday ones would work if you want to go to a different level.
PART 1
For this exercise you’ll be writing your own version of what you see. Examine the photo below. I’m not telling you anything about the photo. Make up your own story behind the photo. What story does it tell you? Think of the 5 W questions (who, what, where, when, why). Who are they? Where are they? Why are they there? What are they doing? When did it happen?
Now go beyond that. What events do you think preceded the photograph (occurred before the photo was taken)? What events do you think followed the photograph (happened after the photo was taken)? How do they feel? What are they thinking?
No, I’m not asking you to write a novel, it’s an exercise in imagination. Gather your friends or family around and see what kind of story you can come up with. Go into as much detail as you want in your own version of the story behind this photo. Who knows where it will take you!
PART 2- Application
Now look at your own photos that you pulled out earlier and jot down the “5Ws” on a separate piece of paper. Now go beyond that. Think about what you felt and what you were thinking when you took the photo if you were the shooter. If you are in the photo, think about what you were doing and thinking at the time the photo was taken. What were the other people thinking or feeling? Is there an element to the event/situation that you want to include to make the photo more significant?
Do your journaling before you do your layout so you know how much room to leave. Remember, what’s the layout without the journaling making it more meaningful?!
We always love to see the results of your efforts so don’t forget to post a link to your layout below. Happy journaling!
